Today I have a fun topic to talk about!…
In 11 months I became fluent in French! There were multiple methods that I used that contributed to my success in learning the language.
1. I lived in France for 11 months
I understand this is probably not realistic for everyone looking to become fluent in a foreign language, however it is the quickest and most efficient way. I lived with a French host family and went to a French High School where I was basically forced to speak French.
2. Change the setting in your phone to your target language
This helped me so much! This seems like such a simple thing, but you look at your phone multiple times throughout the day and it helps to get you thinking in that language.
3. Journal every night
When I was living in France, my host family did not have wifi in my bedroom. I know this sounds crazy, but it really wasn’t that bad. It forced me to either read a French book, or journal. I started a journal; writing about my day and I kept a list words I was learning. I strongly believe this was a key step in my language learning process that helped me learn French so quickly!
4. Find friends who speak your target language
I had many French friends at my school in France, but I am not talking to them nearly as much since I’ve moved back to the United States. One thing I would suggest is creating a “pen pal” or skyping! I continue to maintain my French skills by either texting or skyping my friends back in France. It’s as easy as a weekly call.
5. Follow language accounts on social media
How many hours a week do you think you spend on social media? I probably spend way too much of my time on Instagram, however I follow many French fashion bloggers, my friends from France, and French language accounts, so I’m always seeing French pop up on my feed!
Some of my favorite accounts are:
@frenchwords <– for daily French words
@annarvr <– my favorite French YouTuber
@damonandjo <– an American & Brazilian YouTuber who make videos in French
I hope these tips will jump start your language learning! If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in a comment below and I’ll get back to you ASAP!
Happy language learning,
